Last year, public pressure helped to stop the sell-off of the power industry in NSW. However, now the NSW government has recommenced privatising state services and infrastructure.

Recently, it gave the contract to manage Parklea prison to the GEO corporation, which formerly operated John Howard’s notorious refugee detention centres.

Now, the electricity industry and Sydney Ferries are facing privatisation.

This meeting will establish the benefits of public ownership and discuss what communities can do to oppose privatisation.

May 30: Stop the Sell-Offs Saturday of protest against the NSW government!

Saturday, May 30, 10am-2pm

80% of people in NSW oppose privatisation. They know it means worse services, higher prices and job losses. But most of the pollies don’t care.
So, on Saturday, May 30, join us in saying “enough is enough” to the sell-off plans of the NSW government.
All over the state there will be campaign stalls in shopping centres and protests outside MPs offices. These will deliver a loud and clear message that we want the pollies to force premier Nathan Rees to drop his sell-off schemes.
Protest brings results. The last Super Saturday of protest aginst privatisation (August 30 last year) helped MPs get the message that the people wanted them to block Morris Iemma and Michael Costa’s electicity sell-off. One week later Iemma and Costa disappeared from NSW politics.

On May 1, the Rees government backed off privatising Cessnock jail because of the protests of prison officers and their supporters.
Before May 30 a letter will go to all MPs demanding that they come out against all privatisation plans and commit to voting them down in parliament. Their replies will be published on our web site.
Any MP who doesn’t respond will be regarded as a supporter of privatisation.

Join the campaign on May 30 in your electorate!

NSW government infrastructure yard sale

Alex Mitchell writes in Crikey 21.4.09:

The NSW Labor Government has a death wish. Not content with creating a tide of resentment and anger in electorates across Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle and the bush, it has now incensed its own left-wing faction and many trade unions.

Slaughtering The Cash Cow

If you thought financial management in NSW had hit rock bottom, you were wrong. Bob Walker explains why selling NSW Lotteries might not be such a good idea

The business of NSW Lotteries Corporation is up for sale at arguably the worst time in decades to privatise any government agency, let alone one that is a cash cow.
